Luster

LUSTRE/LUSTER Technique - Lustre is a specific kind of coloring method often found on Art Deco items. It is a liquid made by dissolving precious metals in aqua regia which are  combined with balsam sulfide to produce a resinous metal compound. Adding pine oil to this mix makes it more fluid so that it can be painted more easily. After the item is covered with this mix it is then fired at a temperature of around 700 degrees – a low temperature. This produces a metallic luster or a better description might be that the finish has a pearly iridescence. Items like these are very susceptible to damage from acids, detergents, and hot water. The finish can easily peel. Using pieces made from these chemicals is NOT recommended for serving food. The wares are only decorative.
