Incised
INCISED Technique: Nippon items that are decorated with this technique are very rare. These pieces were created when the clay body was in a state that allowed the ware to be “carved” or “incised.” The outline of the design was etched “free hand” onto the body using a variety of sharp, pointed tools. The clay was carefully removed. This took a great deal of skill and precision. The incised area was then decorated along with the rest of the body, likely with an inlay of colored slip or enamels or glaze. These items are found most often with the backmark Green JVP 47; and, very rarely, JVP 38 – Imperial.
