Cobalt Technique

COBALT Technique – the rich dark blue color used liberally in the Nippon era. Native gosu, a form of cobalt, was replaced with a synthetic cobalt oxide that was imported to Japan. Cobalt is most often found with gold accent. Japanese researchers assert that Nippon Toki (present day Noritake) used the cobalt silicate form. Both oxide and silicate produce a consistently beautiful, rich blue.
